Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi B’s lyrics and visuals for their song WAP has caused controversy, but why?

The lyrics and video for WAP show both pop stars openly talking about their sexual desires, experiences and needs. And that’s what sex is a basic need for every human. This is something that males in the music industry talk about often so why is it still so shocking when women do this in 2020? Women have been doing this since the likes of Madonna’s Like A Virgin and more recently Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj’s Side To Side, but it still isn’t accepted in today’s culture.

It could be argued that saying ‘oh well men do this to women, so we should be able to talk about men in the same way’ isn’t a valid argument, because it means both genders are objectifying each other which is often perceived sexist, but at the end of the day Cardi and Megan are talking about their specific sexual partners and if they are okay with being talked about in this way then I don’t understand why it is such an issue in this modern society.

The only reason I can see why it could be an issue is because it is intimatidating for men to see women talk about these things and uncomfortable for women who still see talking about these things outside the bedroom as taboo. But if this is the case, sex is a common practice in most cultures and if a female wants to talk about it and feel sexually liberated by doing so why shouldn’t they be able too, without being attacked by the media?
